The inspector general of the Labor Department has decided to investigate its agreement to give Wal-Mart Stores 15 days’ notice before investigating any stores facing complaints of child labor violations, according to department officials…

Representative George Miller of California, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce noted that Wal-Mart executives had contributed heavily to President Bush’s re-election.

The “Success” of Afghanistan

In a new UN report examining Afghans’ security, welfare and ability to control their own lives, the world body ranked the country 173rd out of 178 surveyed, with only five states in sub-Saharan Africa faring worse.

The report was also critical of the U.S.-led military engagement in Afghanistan, saying it helped produce a climate of “fear, intimidation, terror and lawlessness” and neglected the longer-term threat to security posed by inequality and injustice.

Negroponte nominated for Director of National Intelligence

Bush nominated Ambassador John Negroponte, current U.S. ambassador to Iraq, for Director of National Intelligence. Often referred to as the “terror ambassador” for his central role in coordinating US covert aid to the Contras who targeted civilians in Nicaragua and shoring up a CIA-backed death squad in Honduras; Negroponte also has minimal experience in the intelligence field.
