saddam goes on trial tomorrow. a lot of people are concerned about the trial. they think maybe people might not view the tribunal as independent, mostly because of the significant involvement of both the iraqi and us goverments. in addition, the tribunal does not have to lack reasonable doubt to convict, as long as they’re “satisfied,” and saddam only has one lawyer with limited experience and 800 pages of evidence he has not had time to read. bush has said he is confident the tribunal will meet “”basic standards of international law”

The people of Belgium have been left reeling by the first adult-only episode of the Smurfs, in which the blue-skinned cartoon characters’ village is annihilated by warplanes.

Belgian television viewers were given a preview of the 25-second film earlier this week, when it was shown on the main evening news. The reactions ranged from approval to shock and, in the case of small children who saw the episode by accident, wailing terror.
