Prisoners riot at Guatanamo
Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay lured American guards to an ambush with a fake suicide attempt, then attacked them with broken light fixtures, fan blades and pieces of metal, U.S. officials said.
Six detainees were injured and Americans used rubber bullets to quell the uprising, believed to be the most serious since the prison camp was established more than four years ago, said Rear-Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr. Several guards received minor injuries.
News of the hour-long clash was revealed the same day the respected United Nations Committee Against Torture urged Washington to close the facility and eliminate all forms of torture against inmates held by U.S. authorities in any detention centre.
The two events were related, say those who have been seeking justice for those being held at the U.S. prison camp in Cuba.
“This is the ultimate response of human beings placed in a situation they can no longer endure,'’ said Bill Goodman, legal director of the New York-based Centre for Constitutional Rights. “These are people who have been tortured and who have no idea what is going to happen to them, who have been denied even the lowliest shred of justice.”
