Clashes in Gaza leave 25 dead

Israel may have violated arms pact, U.S. officials say

The Bush administration will inform Congress on Monday that Israel may have violated agreements with the United States when it fired American-supplied cluster munitions into southern Lebanon during its fight with Hezbollah last summer, the State Department said Saturday.

Iraqi death count

US and Iraqi troops killed 250 militants, tens of thousands of US citizens protested the war at a mall, a girl’s school was bombed in a wave of ambushes, car bombs and gunbattles that left at least 47 people dead, two Iraq war movies won awards at the Sundance Film Festival, a US military helicopter was shot down and four american soldiers were kidnapped and executed.

Israeli President suspended on rape charges

Israeli President Moshe Katsav has been suspended as he faces an expected indictment for allegedly committing rape. On Thursday, dozens of Israeli women gathered outside Katsav’s residence in Jerusalem calling on him to resign.

More Republicans oppose Iraq War troop increase

In the Senate, John Warner of Virginia, former chairman of the Armed Services Committee, joined fellow Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota in producing the non-binding legislation expressing disagreement with Bush’s plan. Their announcement Monday brings to five the number of Senate Republicans publicly opposed to the president’s plan.

In Iraq at least 78 people have died today in a pair of nearly simultaneous explosions. The bombs hit a predominantly Shiite commercial area in Baghdad. Over 150 people were also injured. This marks the second large bombing attack in Baghdad in less than a week.
