Poll finds depression among Palestinians

92% of Palestinians are depressed.

A poll conducted by a West Bank consulting group has found 92 percent of participating Palestinians are depressed by the region`s ongoing violence.

The Near East Consulting poll found a 15 percent increase from a similar study last October and more than 100 percent jump since November 2005 in the number of those suffering anxiety linked to their depression, The Washington Times said Sunday.

Researcher Jamil Rabah said the increase in the study`s findings reveal the effect Hamas and Fatah-based violence have had on the region`s citizens.

‘The higher the level of depression, or discontent, the higher this score comes out, the higher the social fragmentation of society,’ the Near East Consulting official said.

The poll`s depression index was created based on World Health Organization criteria and the study covered 801 Palestinian citizens.
