UN rules tasers can torture

The UN Committee Against Torture has determined the use of taser stun guns can be a form of torture and violate the UN Convention Against Torture. Four men in the United States and three in Canada have died after being shot with tasers in the past two weeks.

Arctic ice shelf broke off Canadian island

A 25-square-mile shelf of floating ice that jutted into the Arctic Ocean for 3,000 years from Canada’s northernmost shore broke away abruptly in the summer of 2005, apparently freed by sharply warming temperatures and jostling wind and waves, scientists said yesterday.

Canada hears asylum case for US soldier

In Canada, a US soldier who fled to avoid serving in Iraq is having his asylum case heard in front of an immigration board. Josh Key, who served in Iraq for eight months, said he decided to desert military service after witnessing several atrocities commited by the US military. In an interview with the BBC, Key said:

“The only people that were getting hurt was the innocent; that was innocent Iraqi people, as well as innocent soldiers.”
