Germany bans Cruise film shoot

Germany has barred the makers of a movie about a plot to kill Adolf Hitler from filming at German military sites because its star Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, the Defence Ministry said on Monday.

EU restores funding to Fatah government

The EU said today it would resume financial aid to the new Fatah-led Palestinian government, as part of international efforts to isolate Hamas in its Gaza stronghold. Meanwhile, Israel has blocked all cargo shipments into Gaza where supplies of fuel, food and medicine are running low. Many areas of Gaza have been without electricity since last week’s fighting.

Putin threatens to target Europe

Vladimir Putin said that Russia intends to aim its missile systems - potentially nuclear weapons - at targets in Europe in retaliation for the U.S. decision to establish antimissile bases there. He also insisted he is the world’s only true democrat. “After the death of Mahatma Gandhi,” he said, with a smile, “I have nobody to talk to.”

Police officers, protestors injured in violent G8 protests

An estimated 400 police and 520 demonstrators were injured when masked protesters showered officers with rocks and beer bottles during a rally against the Group of Eight summit. At least 25 police and 20 protesters were seriously injured.

Radicals “are smashing everything in their way to pieces,” said Karsten Wolff, a police spokesman.

Hamas TV airs anti-Israel kids show despite protest

Hamas’s television station defied the Hamas-led Palestinian government on Friday by airing a show featuring a Mickey Mouse lookalike that urges children to support armed resistance against Israel. During one of the skits, Farfur told young viewers that he aspired to be like the slain spiritual leaders of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood.

Honeybees on rapid decline

Researchers investigating the collapse of honeybee colonies in Europe and the Americas identified several possible reasons for the catastrophe which included:

radiation from cell phones; increased solar radiation; bee AIDS; stress from cross-country travel in trucks; or imidacloprid, a pesticide banned by France in 1999 for spreading “mad bee disease.” Investors were advised to put their money in gold and corn futures to profit off the recession that may result from the disruption of the food chain caused by the vanishing bees. Grapes, which self-pollinate, and olives, which are pollinated by the wind, will not be affected by the bees’ disappearance; Christians pointed out that the Book of Revelation predicts that a famine sparing grapes and olives will precede the apocalypse.
