Under direction by Dick Cheney’s office, and opposed by Condaleeza Rice and the State Department, the Pentagon is reportedly sponsoring the terrorist organization Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK) in order to use them to incite sectarian violence in Iran. The MEK were previously sponsored by Saddam Hussein as both a police force against non-Sunni Muslims and military forces in the Iraq-Iranian war. The MEK also has a history of anti-Western violence. According to a 2002 State Department report,
During the 1970s, the MEK killed US military personnel and US civilians working on defense projects in Tehran and supported the takeover in 1979 of the US Embassy in Tehran.
Western nuclear analysts said yesterday that Tehran lacked the skills, materials and equipment to make good on its immediate nuclear ambitions. The United States government has estimated it will taken Iran 5 to 10 years to develop nuclear weapons, and some analysts have said it could come as late as 2020.
